OK this hasn't got anything to do with coffee but considering that I have a link to the Arts Depot on the blog I feel it's only right to comment on last night's experience.
C'mon Finchleyites there's a brilliant cultural/arts centre on your doorstep so why, oh why, is it always a quarter full at any event that I've been to? Hey????
So last night I went to listen to Vocal Sampling. It may sound like a full Salsa Band but all the music is created by a 6 piece Cuban acapella group. They were all quite youngish too wearing mixed linen n silk beige suits and brown brogues. They managed to get the audience (all ten of us) up and dancing - and am sure there was a group of mature ladies, from Barnet council's accounts department, trying to shimmy across the dance floor which had been erected for the evening. It was a pleasant evening with audience participation and local finchleyites definitely enjoyed it. But the auditorium was a third full. What a shame. What a, crying, shame.
I have two more events booked for November - hopefully they will capture a larger audience.

Hmmm. Well frankly the fault lies with the marketing / pr people at the Arts Depot. They are useless. I am meant to be on their mailing list but I never receive anything. They don't do e mail bulletins. The website is hopeless, hardly giving any information about what's on. They don't put flyers in the local shops or adverts in the local papers.
I'll give you an example. One of my my space chums, Scanner is one the leading electronic composers / sound artists in the world today. I see on his site that on Jan 18 2007 he is launching a new work, with choreographer Shobana Jeyasingh, at wait for it, the Arts Depot. Wow I think. Double Wow. This'll be the coolest thing to hit Finchley since the 1987 World Choc-Ice Eating competition was held at Avenue House. I go on the Arts Depot website and...it only covers events up to the end of November. This was about a week ago.
I propose a plan of action...
1. The Arts Depot should sack their pr people and put you in charge instead.
2. We all put 18 Jan 2007 in our diaries and hope the Arts Depot will still be in business by then.
A new management team is now in place so there should be some improvements - so watch this space.
Scanner (what a lovely name) - sounds interesting. Am sure the depot will still be around in 2 months.
